I came to a stop after observing a vehicle in an adjacent space that appeared to be moving. At that point, while my foot was on what I believed was the brake pedal, the vehicle accelerated rearward rapidly and uncontrollably. I attempted to apply the brake but the vehicle continued accelerating backward at high speed. The vehicle struck three parked vehicles before stopping, causing significant property damage and vehicle body damage to my Camry. The acceleration felt involuntary and beyond my control. The pedal response did not correspond to my intended input. Given the vehicle's age (34 years), I am concerned that one or more of the following mechanical conditions may have contributed to this incident: deterioration or binding of the throttle cable within its conduit; throttle return spring fatigue or failure causing the butterfly valve to remain partially open; or carbon accumulation on the throttle body bore causing the valve to stick in a partially open position. None of these components have been inspected or serviced to my knowledge. I am aware that Toyota issued early recall actions NHTSA Recall Nos. 86V-132 and 90V-040 related to unintended acceleration on startup in Toyota vehicles of this generation, and that Toyota was subsequently penalized $1.2 billion in 2014 for concealing unintended acceleration defects across its vehicle lines. The vehicle fire was first noticed when the seat next to me caught on fire (there was no smoke or smell prior to that). Upon stopping, there was a “woosh” sound and flames began shooting out both sides of the SxS. The meadow on the left side (east) and the forest on the right (west) were immediately ignited. Within 5 minutes the vehicle was totally consumed and destroyed. Personal items (backpack, jacket, vehicle cover) were also lost in addition to tools and other vehicle related items. The location was in a very remote and isolated area with NO CELL SERVICE available. There was no way of calling a 911 Emergency Number. We just had to rely and hope the USFS Fire Lookout spotted the smoke and reporting the fire.
