## Abstract

Consistent with the Alternative Motor Fuels Act of 1988, this final rule extends the incentive created by that Act to encourage the continued production of motor vehicles capable of operating on alternative fuels. The incentive, originally enacted to begin the process of moving the nation toward the use of alternative fuels and away from petroleum dependence, has resulted in the creation of a fleet of vehicles able to operate on alternative fuel. To continue the process of moving the nation toward energy independence and to remain dedicated to the policies underlying the enactment of the Act, this final rule extends the alternative fuel CAFE incentive as contemplated in the NPRM for four additional model years.
