Abstract

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is amending its regulations, in accordance with the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, for the emergency planning licensing requirements for Independent Spent Fuel Storage Facilities (ISFSI) and Monitored Retrievable Storage Facilities (MRS). The amendments are necessary to ensure that local authorities will be notified in the event of an accident so that they may take appropriate action. The regulation will provide a level of preparedness at these facilities that is consistent with NRC's defense- in-depth philosophy.
