## Abstract

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is amending its regulations to allow holders of operating licenses for nuclear power plants to voluntarily replace the traditional source term used in design basis accident analyses with alternative source terms. This action will allow interested licensees to pursue cost beneficial licensing actions to reduce unnecessary regulatory burden without compromising the margin of safety of the facility. The NRC is announcing the availability of a draft regulatory guide and a draft Standard Review Plan section on this subject for public comment. The NRC is also amending its regulations to revise certain sections to conform with the final rule published on December 11, 1996, concerning reactor site criteria.
