Region 5 found that U.S Steel had potentially exceeded the 40 ton per year Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) threshold for New Source Review for their two hot metal desulfurization (HMD) units. The company agreed to a 0.05 lb/ton limit for the three components of HMD: deslagging, HMD injection and hot metal transfer. U.S Steel also agreed to a 0.01 lb/ton limit for HMD injection only.
