On March 2, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., Gould Electronics, Inc. had knowledge of a 1,700 gallon sodium hypochlorite release. Sodium hypochlorite is a hazardous substance under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act with a reportable quantity of 100 pounds. The 1,700 gallons released would equal about 1,414 pounds or 14 times the RQ. The person in charge of the facility notified the National Response Center on March 2, 2004 at 3:30 p.m., 5 hours and 30 minutes after the release.
