On October 14, Region 3 issued a stipulated penalty demand letter for $82,725 to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) located in Montgomery County, MD. The stipulated penalty demand letter assesses stipulated penalties for sanitary sewer discharges (SSDs) that occurred during calendar year 2021. Per the terms of the Consent Decree, half of the assessed stipulated penalties ($41,362.50) will be paid to the United States, and the other half ($41,362.50) will be paid to the State of Maryland. The existing judicial Consent Decree requires evaluation and remediation of WSSC's collection system within specific watershed basins to address and reduce SSDs.
