This case addresses violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act's Underground Injection Control regulations and Class III permit provisions by Morton Salt at their solution mining operation in Glendale, Arizona. EPA finalized an administrative enforcement action against Morton Salt in which they agreed to pay a penalty of $34,100 to resolve violations which included failure to notify EPA of a loss of mechanical integrity in their injection well and continued operation of their injection well after the loss of mechanical integrity which resulted in a discharge of brine outside their salt mining cavern.
