On August 27, 2012, Region 1 filed a Clean Water Act administrative complaint against Strategic Materials, Inc. (SMI), an operator of a source-separated glass recycling facility in Franklin, Massachusetts. Storm water discharges from the facility entered wetlands abutting Mine Brook, a tributary of the Charles River. The complaint alleges unauthorized discharge of storm water associated with an industrial activity and discharge in violation of the Multi-Sector General Permit.
Strategic Materials, Inc. has agreed to pay $159,750 to settle violations of the Clean Water Act concerning its unauthorized discharge of storm water associated with an industrial activity and discharge in violation of the Multi-Sector General Permit. After the inspection, Strategic Materials acted promptly to bring its facility into compliance with the Clean Water Act.
