## Summary

General Iron Industries, Inc. (General Iron) owns and operates a metals recycling facility in Chicago, Illinois. On December 10, 2010, EPA issued a Notice of Violation (NOV) to General Iron. EPA alleged that General Iron violated 35 IAC 212.301 of the Illinois State Implementation Plan (SIP) when fugitive particulate emissions were observed crossing the property line of the facility. EPA also alleged that General Iron violated 35 IAC 201.141 of the Illinois SIP when they caused, threatened or allowed the discharge or emission of contaminants into the air which tended to cause air pollution.

To resolve the violations, General Iron performed a multi-phased feasibility study in 2011 and into 2012 in order to identify additional methods they could employ to better control particulate matter emissions from their shredder. At the conclusion of the feasibility study, General Iron presented their findings to EPA. General Iron installed a hood over their shredder to capture emissions. They will install and operate a cyclone and Pedcon UHF High-Efficiency Roll Filter System, or equivalent. General Iron will maintain and continue using their customized shredder enclosure and water suppression system. EPA issued an Administrative Consent Order (ACO) to General Iron on June 29, 2012 that includes these and other measures to bring the facility into compliance. The ACO will terminate two years from its effective date.
