This is an administrative penalty action undertaken against Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. for violations of the General Duty Clause of CAA §112(r)(1) that led to the release of approx. 3200 pounds of anhydrous ammonia to the environment on June 22, 2011. The release resulted in the evacuation and transport to local hospitals of 13 workers. Under the terms of the CA/FO Barrick has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $100,800. Barrick has corrected the deficiencies in its ammonia refrigeration system that underlay the GDC violations.
