On September 15, 2014, Region 10 issued an administrative settlement agreement and order on consent (ASAOC) for a removal action at the Sierra Zinc Mine site near Colville, Washington. Several entities, including the Goldfield Corporation, operated a mining and milling operation at the site. The ASAOC requires the Goldfield Corporation to implement a removal action at the site. The removal action will involve, among other actions, the consolidation and capping of contaminated mine wastes at the site. EPA estimates that Goldfield will spend approximately $1.65 million implementing the required removal action over two construction seasons. The ASAOC also requires the Goldfield Corporation to reimburse EPA for response costs it incurs related to the ASAOC.
