This case addresses violations of the Clean Air Act (CAA) by Makita Corporation ( Makita ), a Japanese power driven handtool manufacturer. During 2013 and 2014 Makita imported approximately 22,000 pieces of equipment which were not covered by an EPA approved certificate of conformity. Makita disclosed the violations to EPA on May 1, 2014.
As part of the settlement with EPA, Makita paid a $76,000 civil penalty. Makita also stopped the sale of about 8,800 pieces of equipment that had already been imported and exported them to a country other than Canada or Mexico.
