Summary

On September 29, 2015 EPA entered into an Administrative Order on Consent with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, H .Kramer, and the City of Chicago to clean up the Pilsen Soil Operable Unit 1 Railroad Spur and Alley Site in Chicago, Illinois. The site includes a railroad spur and an alley adjacent to the H. Kramer facility in the Pilsen neighborhood. The cleanup includes the removal of lead-contaminated soil and construction of an asphalt cover to eliminate potential exposure to residents in the area, including students in the adjacent Benito Juarez High School. The main source of lead contamination in the surface soil resulted from the deposition of historical fugitive air emissions from H. Kramer, a brass and bronze foundry. The City of Chicago owns the alley and a portion of the railroad spur and has agreed to install and maintain the asphalt cover on its property. EPA will be overseeing the cleanup, which is expected to start in October and be completed by December 2015.
