Summary

On July 10, 2017, Region 10 filed a consent agreement and final order resolving violations of the Clean Water Act by Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation (dba Norton Sound Seafood Products), located in Nome, Alaska. Respondent, which operates a seafood processing facility, violated its NPDES permit. Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation failed to adequately conduct daily visual inspections of its grinders, waste conveyance system, the sea surface, and the nearby shoreline; failed to identify the discharge location and chemicals used in their tote washing process; exceeded the dimension requirements for seafood processing waste residues; and failed to complete all reporting and record keeping required under the permit. By regularly inspecting facilities of all sizes, EPA helps maintain a level playing field among all permitted processors and insures that permit violators do not enjoy an unfair economic advantage over their permit-abiding competitors. By properly managing waste and meeting their discharge permit limits, seafood processors can safeguard the marine environment and profit from America's recognition of seafood as an important part of a healthy diet. The company agreed to pay a penalty of $51,050.
