On May 11, 2017, Region 2 issued an Administrative Order to the Respondent in connection with the Gowanus Canal Superfund Site, located in Brooklyn, New York. The Order calls for Respondent to design a bulkhead barrier wall along a four city block long section of the Canal to address contamination from the Fulton Manufactured Gas Plant State Superfund Site. The Order is necessary to eliminate coal tar releases to the Canal, provide structural support for upcoming dredging, and ensure integration with the on-going design of two other major components of the September 2013 remedy, a cap to be placed within the Canal after dredging, and a future Combined Sewer Overflow retention tank to be constructed by New York City on property adjacent to the barrier wall. The design work under the Order is estimated to cost $500,000 and is expected to take less than a year to implement.
