On September 15, 2017, Region 10 signed a compliance order on consent resolving alleged violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) regarding Motor Vehicle Waste Disposal Wells (MVWDW) by Karlson Motors, Inc., located in Ketchikan, Alaska. Respondent owns and operates a service area for motor vehicle repair and maintenance, which at the time had an open MVWDW. MVWDWs were banned in Alaska in January 2005 in order to protect drinking water from motor vehicle contaminants. Injection well activity can allow movement of fluid containing contaminants (such as wastewater from vehicle servicing) into underground sources of drinking water. The facility is under a compliance schedule to close the well by September 30, 2017. If contamination is found, the order requires removal of all contaminated liquids, sludge and soil in and around the injection well.
