On September 27, 2017, EPA Region 10 settled with Kloosterboer Dutch Harbor LLC for violations of EPCRA 304 and CERCLA 103 for failure to timely report an ammonia release at their facility in Unalaska, Alaska. Kloosterboer Dutch Harbor LLC agreed to pay a penalty of $10,008. In addition, Kloosterboer Dutch Harbor LLC will implement two SEPs, which consist of the upgrade and expansion of the existing ammonia refrigeration control system at the facility, and training personnel as emergency responders and the purchase and donation of HazMat equipment for use in emergency responses at the facility and at other facilities in Unalaska. The system upgrade includes a Next Generation remote monitoring and alarm notification system using modern information technology so that information about pollutant releases is available closer to real time. The value of the SEPs are $26,498.
