Summary

On October 25, 2018, Region 1 filed a Consent Agreement and Final Order (CAFO) to resolve an administrative penalty case against Tasman Leather Group, LLC (Tasman), located at 9 Main St., Hartland, Maine. Tasman is a leather tannery that processes pre-treated hides using ignitable and toxic chemicals that are regulated by RCRA. The CAFO requires Tasman to pay a $48,000 penalty to resolve numerous past violations of RCRA, as alleged in a complaint Region 1 filed on September 28, 2017. On September 28, 2017, Region 1 filed an Administrative Complaint and Compliance Order against Tasman Leather Group, LLC, of Hartland, Maine, alleging violations of RCRA. The facility performs re-tanning and finishing of leather for the footwear and fashion industries. The Complaint alleges that Tasman violated Sections 3002 and 3005 of RCRA, Chapter 13 of Title 38 of the Maine Revised Statutes, and the regulations promulgated thereunder at Chapter 850 et seq. The Complaint seeks a penalty of $120,088 and the Compliance Order requires Tasman to maintain compliance with applicable RCRA regulations at the facility. The State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection was aware of EPA's inspection and follow-up with the facility, and also responded to EPA requests for information regarding Tasman's facility
