On September 29, 2017, EPA Region 1 issued an Administrative Complaint alleging violations of RCRA at its facility located in Sanford, ME. Respondent is one of ten global subsidiaries held by GVS SpA, an Italian corporation. Respondent primarily manufactures filters for life sciences applications. The most significant violations in the complaint are: failure to provide employee training; failure to have adequate aisle space between containers of hazardous waste; and failure to conduct weekly inspections, some of these being repeat violations. The pending action against GVS North America will ensure the correction of hazardous waste violations which may pose a risk to facility workers, public health, and the environment. The State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection is aware of EPA's inspection of GVS, of the Notice of Potential Violation that EPA issued to GVS, and of this enforcement action. The proposed penalty is $76,868.
