The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 is issuing a Consent Agreement and Final Order (CAFO) to resolve violations related to venting hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, and visible particulate matter in excess of applicable limits at the Whemco Ohio Foundry, Inc. (Whemco) facility located in Lima, Ohio. This CAFO resolves violations of failure to obtain an operating permit and failure to comply with National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPs) Subpart ZZZZZ for Iron and Steel Foundry Area Sources. In particular, Whemco failed to submit notifications and certifications, to prepare compliance plans, and to conduct performance testing of their metal melting emissions.
Whemco resolved these violations by applying for and receiving a Permit to Install and Operate from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency; preparing and submitting notifications, certification, and compliance plans; and conducting emissions performance testing. No further injunctive relief is required. Whemco agreed to pay a penalty of $200,000.
