EPA issued an Administrative Consent Order (ACO) for Ameriwood Industries, Inc. (Ameriwood), Dowagiac, Michigan, to address violations regarding opacity in excess of the Michigan State Implementation Plan opacity limit. EPA documented six 6-minute average opacity readings greater than the facility's 20% Michigan State Implementation Plan opacity limit. EPA discovered these violations during a March 28, 2017, inspection of the facility, which was initiated from complaints received by our office. A Notice of Violation was issued to Ameriwood on June 22, 2017. The ACO requires Ameriwood to install equipment to the facility's boiler to improve combustion and reduce visible emissions. The ACO also requires the facility to conduct stack testing after the new equipment is installed, along with certifying employees of the facility to conduct EPA Method 9 readings.
