Summary

On June 21, 2018, U.S. EPA Region 5 filed a Consent Agreement and Final Order (CAFO) that commences and concludes an administrative action with Sun Steel Treating of South Lyon, Michigan (SST). SST is a metal heat-treating facility specializing plasma nitriding, salt bath hardening, and vacuum hardening. SST also offers straightening, annealing, and blasting services. The CAFO alleges that SST violated the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) as determined during an inspection on August 29, 2017. The inspection revealed several issues on site, including 1) failure to accumulate hazardous waste in allowable units, 2) failure to date and keep containers of hazardous waste closed, 3) failure to provide annual training to employees, 4) failure to minimize releases of hazardous waste, and 5) failure to label containers of used oil. SST has agreed to pay a $44,600 civil penalty to resolve the alleged violations and has demonstrated that it is now in compliance with the applicable RCRA regulations.
