On June 20th, EPA signed a ROD for the Old Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Operable Unit 6 (OU-6) for soil, sludge, sediment, and surface water. The selected remedy for the OU-6 Old WWTP is excavation and offsite disposal of sludge. There are no elevated risks associated with soil, sediment, and surface water. The remedy will be protective of human health and the environment by preventing ecological exposure to metals and pesticides in the sludge. Five-year reviews will not be required at the OU-6 Old WWTP since there will be no hazardous substances remaining on site above levels that permit unlimited use and unrestricted exposure. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality concurred with the decision.
