On September 23, 2021, Region 10 settled with the United States Air Force at Eielson Air Force Base
(AK) for violations of Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The
implementing regulations of RCRA require that generators of hazardous waste must manage the
hazardous waste in compliance with RCRA requirements to protect human health and the environment.
The violations are based on an October 2020 inspection of Eielson Air Force Base and include 1)
failure to make a hazardous waste determination; 2) failure to comply with the conditions to store
hazardous waste without a permit or interim status by not performing weekly inspections; 3) failure to
properly manage universal waste lamps; and 4) failure to properly label a container of used oil. The Air
Force will pay a penalty of $23,354.
