On September 28, 2021, EPA Region 1 and MacDermid Enthone Inc. (MacDermid) settled a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) administrative penalty case for alleged violations of federal and federally authorized state hazardous waste regulations at MacDermid's chemical manufacturing facility in West Haven, Connecticut. The violations included the failure to make proper hazardous waste determinations, failure to properly date and label hazardous waste storage containers and a tank, failure to provide adequate aisle space, and failure to keep the concrete base of the facility's hazardous waste storage area free from cracks and gaps. Under the settlement, MacDermid certified that the facility corrected its RCRA violations and established new RCRA compliance procedures, including new procedures for hazardous waste determinations. MacDermid also agreed to pay a $86,769 settlement penalty. RCRA compliance is important to ensure that hazardous wastes are safely managed and stored to prevent potential harm to human health and the environment.
