On June 3, 2022, Region 10 settled with the 611th Civil Engineer Squadron, U.S. Air Force for violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) at Eareckson Air Station on Shemya Island, Alaska. The implementing regulations of RCRA require generators of hazardous waste to manage the hazardous waste in compliance with the RCRA requirements to protect human health and the environment. EPA alleges that starting in 2017, the 611th Civil Engineer Squadron has generated and stored more than 55,000 pounds of hazardous waste at the facility without a storage permit required by Section 3005 of RCRA and 40 C.F.R. ? 270.1. EPA also alleges that the 611th Civil Engineer Squadron failed to properly manage universal waste at Eareckson Air Station. The U.S. Air Force agreed to pay a penalty of $206,811. According to EJScreen, this facility is in an area of potential EJ concern for indices in the State Percentile and EPA Region Percentile.
