On September 12, 2024, Region 10 filed a Consent Agreement and Final Order resolving alleged violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act by Matsu located in Wasilla, Alaska. Respondent operates an automotive repair shop in which Respondent conducts repair on motor vehicles. Respondent is alleged to be in violation of the regulations protecting underground (groundwater) sources of drinking water from injection wells. Injection well activity can allow movement of fluid containing contaminants (such as wastewater from vehicle repair) into underground sources of drinking water. Motor Vehicle Waste Disposal Wells (MVWDWs) were banned in Alaska on April 5, 2000 and were required to be closed by January 1, 2005. Matsu has agreed to permanently close the injection well and to pay a penalty of $42,000. Closure of MVWDWs protects drinking water from potential motor vehicle contaminants.
