Summary

Hitran Corporation is a company located in Flemington, NJ. The facility manufactures transformers and inductors. The process of cleaning the spray guns used to paint the transformers and inductors creates paint related D001and F005 hazardous waste for the use of Toluene. In 1998, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) conducted an inspection of the facility and found several container violations and failure to post emergency numbers. In 2005, EPA inspected the facility and found similar violations. The facility also was cleaning their paint spray guns by spraying Toluene into the paint filters. This caused the filters to beocme a listed hazardous waste for Toluene. These filters were thrown into the regular trash and not handled as hazardous waste. The paint related hazardous waste was also stored in a capacity that allowed for spillage, and releases into the environment. A complaint and compliance ordercites storage of hazardous waste without a permit, failure to make a hazardous waste determination, and failure to minimize risk. The penality is in the amount of $73,224. The Order requires the facility to come into compliance with the sections violated during the inspection.
