EPA has negotiated a consent decree under CERCLA. Under the decree, potentially responsible parties will implement (under EPA supervision) remedial design/remedial action at the West Kingston/URI Superfund Site. The site has a plume of groundwater that is contaminated with hazardous substances, in this case volatile organic chemicals. The remedy to be implemented by the PRPs was selected by EPA in a record of decision in September 06. The remedy will, among other things, treat the plume with injections of chemical oxidants. These injections should remove most of the contaminant mass. A long period of natural attenuation of contaminants will also be necessary for the groundwater to be restored to drinking water levels. EPA expects the decree will be lodged with the district court sometime later in the summer of 2008.
