## Abstract

By today's action, EPA approves test methods for the analysis of Escherichia coli (E. coli), enterococci, Cryptosporidium and Giardia in fresh ambient water matrices. In addition, EPA approves test methods for the analysis of enterococci in marine ambient water matrices. The test methods approved in today's rule have been published by the following organizations: EPA, American Public Health Association, American Water Works Association, Water Environment Federation, Association of Official Analytical Chemists International, and American Society for Testing and Materials, or commercial vendors. EPA's approval of these methods will help States, Tribes, communities, and environmental laboratories better assess public health risks from microbiological pollutants.
