Abstract

NMFS announces final 1997 harvest specifications of total allowable catches (TACs), initial apportionments of TACs for each category of groundfish, and associated management measures in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (BSAI). This action is necessary to establish harvest limits and associated management measures for groundfish during the 1997 fishing year. NMFS is apportioning reserves to the initial TACs (ITACs) specified for certain species amounts to allow for full harvest opportunity of these TACs. NMFS is also closing fisheries and issuing an inseason adjustment as specified in the final 1997 groundfish specifications. These measures are intended to conserve and manage the groundfish resources in the BSAI.
