In accordance with the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, as amended (MMPA), NMFS publishes its final List of Fisheries (LOF) for 1998. The LOF classifies fisheries as Category I, II, or III, based on their levels of incidental mortalities and serious injuries of marine mammals. The LOF informs the public of the level of interactions with marine mammals in various U.S. commercial fisheries and of fisheries' requirements under certain MMPA provisions, to register for Authorization Certificates or carry fishery observers.
