ABSTRACT Cancer morbidity and mortality disproportionally affect the most socially and economically disadvantaged. The emergence of technology has transformed the healthcare industry in high-resource settings, and has the potential to significantly impact access to care in low-income regions. Innovations in cancer prevention and care could also provide the possibility of detection and treatment of diseases which are often thought of as a death sentence in low and middle countries (LMICs). There are many groups of clinicians, researchers, engineers, and industry partners working on affordable technologies for cancer prevention and care in low- resource settings. Bringing these groups together has the potential to help cement the field as a necessary and exciting area to reduce the global cancer burden. This application requests support for a scientific meeting entitled the 1st International Symposium for Resource-Appropriate Technologies in Global Oncology to be held at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, November 19-21, 2020. The application requests support for venue rental, participation of a keynote speaker and working group leaders, Young Investigator and International Investigator Travel Grants, and preparation and publication of the meeting proceedings in the Journal of Global Oncology. To our knowledge, this will be the first scientific conference dedicated to affordable technologies in global oncology in the United States that will be open to the public. In addition to serving as a review of cost-effective innovations in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, this meeting will allow participating clinicians and investigators to interact in four working groups focused on different aspects of affordable technologies in global oncology: 1) new technologies in cancer diagnosis and prevention, 2) new technologies in cancer treatment, 3) dissemination and implementation of new technologies in global health, and 4) challenges in conducting global oncology research. Participants will include domestic and international clinical researchers, global health experts, biomedical industry partners, and early investigators and students. The ultimate purpose is to develop a research agenda for the future of global oncology research with a focus on the use of accessible, and low-cost innovations that can reach those in remote or resource-poor locations. This Symposium will foster novel and multi-disciplinary collaborations with the goal of advancing scientific knowledge and improvement of cancer disparities worldwide.
