Abstract

PROJECT ABSTRACT The Functional Neurological Disorder Society (FNDS) will hold its inaugural meeting as a society, and the 4th International Conference on Functional Neurological Disorders (FND), on June 14-16, 2020, in Boston, MA. This application seeks funding in support of meeting programming addressing the following specific aims: (1) to disseminate state-of-the-art knowledge findings through experts speaking on all clinical presentations of the disorder, across all age groups from pediatrics to the elderly, to reduce gaps in care and education; (2) to facilitate networking and collaborations to mentor careers, and increase interest and skills of all participants, but especially diverse, talented, young and new investigators, and multi-disciplinary clinicians; (3) to stimulate innovative areas of research in FND with the goal of creating novel and effective treatments (including remote access treatment delivery, use of virtual technology, neuromodulation), improving understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of the disorder and establishing new funding opportunities, and integrated teams; and (4) to provide a roadmap for future research and foster collaborations to further education and training of professionals of professionals from diverse backgrounds. FNDS is the only multidisciplinary professional society with an emphasis on FND. The society is made up of healthcare professionals, scientists, and students/trainees with representatives from different training backgrounds including: neurology, psychiatry, psychology, neuroimaging, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation medicine, nursing, speech and language therapy, and social work. The society’s mission is to disseminate knowledge, promote research, and improve the care of patients with FND. The 4th International FND Conference will be attended by an estimated 600 individuals from the U.S. and abroad, will feature 37 speakers and more than 250 presentations. This multi-disciplinary conference brings together leading international experts across disciplines including neuroethics. The meeting’s educational sessions, networking events, and exhibit hall will facilitate exchange of information and ideas. This meeting also provides development opportunities for young professionals and students, and to: (1) share their research via abstract submission for poster presentation and general session presentation; (2) present challenging cases in a specifically designated “Junior Grand Rounds” case study video session; (3) participate in a poster mentorship program by having senior FNDS members provide commentary and feedback on their scientific work at the meeting; and (4) have accepted poster and oral presentation abstracts published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry.
