## Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY
Intestinal lipid metabolism is a flourishing area of research because of its importance in fundamental
physiological processes and its roles in the development and treatment of disease. Launched in the early
1990s, the series Intestinal Lipid Transport and Metabolism Science Research Conferences (SRC),
sponsored by FASEB, has focused on a range of themes that has included molecular, cellular, and
integrative physiological studies of lipids and lipoproteins, chylomicron assembly and secretion, lipid transfer
proteins, enzymes in lipid synthesis, intestinal lipid droplet formation and mobilization, and bile acid
metabolism. The pivotal role of the intestine in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis has received
increasing attention of the scientific community in recent years. In particular, the role of the gut microbiome
has been under intense investigation over the last decade, and literature on the systemic effects of nutrients,
bile acids, and gut hormones are prolific. Despite its importance and central role in metabolism, many open
questions regarding intestinal lipid biology remain. Recognizing its importance, FASEB has agreed to
sponsor a 2020 FASEB SRC in the series. Based in part on the interests expressed by potential attendees in
an online survey conducted by the organizers (see more description of the survey below), this meeting will
highlight cutting-edge advances, from molecular and cellular to organismal studies in intestinal biology and
related metabolic diseases, presented by recognized and emerging leaders in the fields. It will include a
keynote address (Mansbach Lecture), 8 oral and 2 poster presentation sessions, as well as a community
introduction event, an “open mic” research sharing forum, and a career development workshop to facilitate
scientific exchanges and networking. The long-term objective of this proposal is to advance fundamental
areas of intestinal lipid metabolism research that have strong clinical and
