PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT Background: The proposed Conference is “The International Seminar on Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention, 2020 (International Seminar 2020)”, the 51st annual convening of the International Ten-Day Teaching Seminars on Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention. Since 1968, these Seminars have trained more than 2000 Fellows from 100 countries; its first convening in the US will be from August 16-23, 2020. Long-term objective: To strengthen science, policy, and practice in heart disease and stroke prevention and cardiovascular health promotion throughout the world. The overarching strategy of the International Seminar is to introduce early career investigators from around the world to the principles and methods of epidemiologic research and biostatistics and to engage them to become productive members of this scientific community. Specific aims of the International Seminar 2020: (1) to develop 1-4 preliminary proposals for multi-national collaborative population research projects on the broad topic of promotion and preservation of ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) throughout the lifespan, from the beginning of life; (2) to demonstrate the Advanced Seminar model of the International Seminar as a unique and powerful vehicle for fostering and accelerating development of such critical and timely research proposals and regional capacity with both local and global significance; and (3) to promote a culture of multi-national collaborative research as a vital strategy to address challenges and opportunities in global CVH for the 21st Century. Mission relevance for NHLBI: The overarching mission of NHLBI's Division of Cardiovascular Sciences (DCVS) is to “turn discovery into cardiovascular health”, with a Strategic Vision Implementation Plan including a focus on “promoting cardiovascular health and preventing cardiovascular disease across the lifespan” (1). This strategic priority led DCVS to convene an expert Workshop, publish a Notice Of Special Interest, and announce a Request for Information on this topic, precisely the focus of the International Seminar 2020 (2-4). Design and methods: 24 selected Fellows from 12 or more countries will work intensively, with guidance by an exceptionally qualified and diverse Faculty, in 3 phases: Pre-work - review of provided literature, assessment of local research opportunities, and offering of 1-3 potential questions for collaborative multi-national collaborative research on CVH; On-site work - discuss relevant cross-cutting topics, produce one or more highly promising proposals for multi-national collaborative research on CVH, and critically review, revise, and rank the proposals for priority seed funding; and Post-work - refine one or more of these proposals to become a formal research grant application. Key focus: To improve population CVH through targeted research training and its application in epidemiology and implementation science, in multi-national collaborative studies.
