## Abstract

ABSTRACT
The International Workshop on HIV Pediatrics is organized on an annual basis prior to the biennially organized
IAS or AIDS Conference. This Workshop is the only meeting entirely devoted to research in prevention and
treatment of HIV infection in infants, children and adolescents, making it the premier forum for the world’s
leading researchers. By bringing together experts from different disciplines with presentations in a variety of
formats, the meeting offers a collaborative setting where the latest developments are presented, discussed,
interrogated and evaluated.
The 12th International Workshop on HIV Pediatrics will be organized in San Francisco and Oakland, California,
July 3-4, 2020. The program will include topics from among the following: 1) HIV infection in pregnant and
breastfeeding women; 2) Prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT), including HIV-exposed
uninfected children; 3) Pediatric HIV case finding (including early infant diagnosis); 4) Antiretroviral treatment of
pediatric HIV infection; 5) Complications of HIV and its treatment in children and youth; 6) Co-infections in
children and youth living with HIV; 7) HIV infection and adolescents (perinatally and behaviorally infected); 8)
Prevention of HIV and STDs in adolescents and young adults; 9) Implementation science research on
optimizing care of children and youth and PMTCT; and 10) Pediatric remission/cure research.
The meeting format is highly innovative. Moving from a more traditional format of plenaries and oral abstract
sessions, the organizers have introduced several new approaches including structured debates, oral poster
presentations, poster walks, clinical-case presentation and discussions, curated panel discussions, and video
presentations. Plenaries include short presentations highlighting different facets of common issues followed by
interactive discussions. Attendance has increased substantially in the last several years with almost 250
delegates in 2019 and annual evaluations are highly favorable underscoring the importance of this Workshop.
The aims of the Workshop are to provide a platform for presentation and discussion of the latest developments
in the field; to gather leading researchers involved in pediatric and perinatal HIV in a stimulating, interactive
forum and; to promote the next generation of research by supporting junior and international investigators. The
objective of this proposal is to provide support for this unique workshop including participation of key plenary
speakers as well as members from the community of adolescents living with HIV infection, and to increase the
number of scholarships for junior investigators and investigators from low-income countries.
