Abstract

Increasing the Capability and Capacity of Microbiological and Chemical Testing to Support an Integrated Food Defense and Food Safety System Administrative Core Project Summary / Abstract The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) Consumer Protection Laboratory (CPL) and Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL), seek to provide to the FDA all deliverables proposed herein. In order to do so, it requires a team that can produce high quality work at acceptable time frames and within budget. In other words: Good, Fast, Cheap. The administration of CPL is equipped to support both laboratories in their work, providing as support a deputy director, multiple laboratory directors and fiscal officers to assist. Jason Kong acts as the coordinating PI for the LFFM and as Project Leads for chemistry projects; Yamir Rosa is the Project Lead for all microbiology projects, save Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), which is led by Dr. Yan Zhang. Yamir and Dr. Zhang will coordinate with their own personnel to complete their project duties while Jason will work with other chemistry supervisors to schedule activities for completion. The shared quality management system of ADDL and CPL is mature, having been under the scope of accreditation for ISO/IEC 17025 since 2009; accredited methods include 5 flexible chemistry technologies, ten chemical methods, ten microbiological methods, one bacteriological method, two viral methods and two WGS methods. Funds from the LFFM will be used to support this quality system through the funding of audits from the accrediting body, through maintenance of software licenses enabling effective implementation of the quality system, and through support of the quality assurance officer and manager. ODA-CPL and ODA-ADDL will approximately on a quarterly basis confirm all projects are on track in terms of quality of data, target completion date and allocated spending priorities. Additional funds are set aside to supplement routine maintenance of CPL-wide equipment and infrastructure. Finally, the Project Leads will work to ensure a timely reporting of presumptive or confirmed positive samples, of quarterly sample reports, of mid-year progress reports, of budget resolution reports and of Research Performance Progress Reports.
