## Abstract

Increasing the Capability and Capacity of
Microbiological and Chemical Testing to Support an
Integrated Food Defense and Food Safety System
Chemistry Discipline, Animal Food Product Testing Analytical Track
Project Summary / Abstract
The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) Consumer Protection Laboratory (CPL) proposes to
participate in risk assessment of animal food products through surveillance testing and
collaboration with state and federal regulators. The Plant Health division of ODA is the primary
state regulatory sampling organization and has enjoyed a strong relationship with ODA-CPL in
handling regulatory testing of animal feed for label claim verification and for possible
contaminants. ODA-CPL proposes therefore to acquire 500 animal food samples for
surveillance testing. The laboratory is prepared to perform GC-MS, LC-MS and ICP-MS screens
for toxins, poisons, toxic metals and any other type of contaminant that might be present in
animal feed samples. In addition, the laboratory will target specific types of commodity/hazard
pairs identified by the FDA to be of potential interest for any given budget period, with an
emphasis in the first year of focusing on toxic metals by ICP-MS. The laboratory agrees to
provide timely reporting in the case of a presumptive positive to both the Plant Health division
and to the FDA technical lead and project manager.
