## Abstract

Project Summary
Special Projects: Track 1 - Sample Collection
The Foods and Drug Unit under the Consumer Protection Division (CPD) of the Texas
Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has had maintained a partnership in support of
cooperative agreements with the Laboratory Services Section (LSS). CPD has collected
samples on behalf of LSS since the inception of the Federal Emergency Response Network
(FERN)/ FDA Microbiology Cooperative Agreement (mCAP) in 2009. Currently, CPD supports
LSS with sampling for the following cooperative agreements: FERN/FDA Microbiology
Cooperative Agreement (mCAP) (RFA-FD-15-019) and the FDA Maintenance and
Enhancement of ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation Cooperative Agreement (RFA-FD-19-018).
Through these cooperative grant opportunities, LSS and CPD have collected and analyzed an
additional 15,000 samples since 2009 that would not have been tested without these grant
opportunities in place.
The purpose of this track is to assist laboratories in obtaining the samples needed to meet the
goals specified in the human food testing tracks LSS is applying for under the new funding
opportunity: (PAR-20-105) Laboratory Flexible Funding Model. Funds provided under this track
will be utilized to cover costs CPD incurs while collecting samples for LSS to complete
deliverables stated under human food tracks. Funding will be utilized to compensate CPD for
collecting samples such as the supplies utilized during sample collection, paying for shipping
costs, and paying for samples purchased at the manufacturer or retail location.
