Abstract

Project Summary / Abstract for State of Rhode Island PAR-20-105 Laboratory Flexible Funding Model (LFFM) (U19) Application. Discipline D: Special Projects, Track 1: Sample Collection Project Summary/Abstract The Rhode Island State Health Laboratories (RISHL) is the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited food regulatory laboratory for the state FDA Manufactured Food Regulatory Program (MFRPS) and as such, provides laboratory support to the state and federal integrated food safety system under the Food Safety Modernization Act. Under the proposed project, the RISHL seeks to continue and enhance surveillance sampling efforts collected and tested for the MFRPS program by leveraging its longstanding partnership with the state’s food regulatory agency, the RIDOH Center for Food Protection (CFP). The RISHL recognizes the importance of conducting carefully planned and executed surveillance sampling as a means to find and remove adulterated food from the marketplace. The RISHL and CFP have partnered on multiple surveillance sampling efforts over the past six years and seek to continue these efforts going forward. This proposed project will allow for the continued training of staff, purchase of sampling supplies and payment for samples purchased at the manufacturer or retail location. These efforts will significantly improve the joint RISHL and CFP surveillance sampling efforts and thus the laboratory’s ability to support to the state and federal integrated food safety system under the Food Safety Modernization Act.
