## Abstract

LFFM Project Summary - Method Development, Single Laboratory Validation
The Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards (MFRPS) established a uniform
foundation for the management of state programs responsible for the regulation of facilities
including laboratory analysis for chemical and microbiological contaminants. Through this
program the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s (GDA) laboratories achieved, enhanced, and
maintained ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. As part of moving this program forward the ISO testing
methods must be expanded and enhanced. The GDA laboratory proposes to develop a method
for the pesticide analysis of edible tree nuts for human food consumption. Currently, there are
no AOAC or other standard methods for the pesticide analysis of tree nuts. Tree nuts would
present a challenging food product to analyze due to the hard composition in conjunction with
the presence of various oils, carbohydrates, and minerals. With millions of pounds of tree nuts
consumed in food products each year tree nuts represent a ubiquitous food product important to
U.S. food production and food consumption. This study would initially address pecans and then
move to other important commodities like almonds and pistachios. By establishing a method,
and a validation study for this analysis, samples can be examined with confidence to better to
enhance Global Food Safety initiatives and protect the public by aiding in an integrated national
food safety system.
