Abstract

SC DHEC Admin Core The goal of the Laboratory Flexible Funding is to support the development of an integrated food safety system as directed by the FDA food safety modernization act (FSMA) by supporting and enhancing state food testing laboratories and encouraging collaboration among stakeholders at both the state and national level. The Public Health Laboratory (PHL) at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) is a multi- disciplinary, integrated source of diagnostic services including analytical support and consultation for physicians, private laboratories, hospitals, and county health departments. The laboratory testing involved in this grant will occur in the Microbiology Division. The PHL Microbiology Division consists of seven laboratories, five of which work together to provide an integrated laboratory response to food surveillance and foodborne disease outbreak testing. The Division Director and PI, Megan Davis, holds a Bachelor of Science in Bacteriology and a Master of Science in Food Science and Technology with an emphasis in Food Microbiology. The PI will lead the Grants Management Team consisting of the Principal Investigator (PI), Microbiology Division Program Manager, Administrator Manager and three laboratory supervisors in the implementation of this cooperative agreement. In order to meet the requirements of the cooperative agreement the PHL will continue active collaboration with other organizations whose representatives are key partners.
