# Discipline C: Radiochemistry, Analytical Track 2: Radiochemistry Capability/Capacity Development (Extension-Alpha)

> **NIH FDA U19** · COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY · 2020 · $145,314

## Abstract

Project Summary/Abstract – Track2
The goal of this track of the project is to develop the necessary capabilities to analyze food
samples for alpha-emitting radionuclides in addition to the existing capabilities to analyze for
gamma-emitters. For this purpose, an alpha spectrometry system with 32 alpha chambers that
has been donated to the Health Physics program will be serviced and placed back into
operational condition. In addition, the necessary methods for sample digestion, radiochemical
separation and source preparation will be tested and validated using standard reference
materials. A Graduate Research Assistant will be trained to perform the required laboratory
operations under the supervision of the laboratory director.
