## Abstract

NEVADA STATE PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORY ADM CORE ABSTRACT
The Nevada State Public Health Laboratory (NSPHL) is Nevada’s only public food
provides a wide range of diagnostic and analytical services for
the assessment and surveillance of infectious/communicable diseases, foodborne
outbreak analyses, radiological testing (in development), biological and chemical
terrorism analyses and the analytical evaluation of water to evaluate safety for
consumption and compliance throughout Nevada.
testing laboratory and
 The NSPHL is accredited/licensed
by various agencies for human and environmental testing: CLIA, College of American
Pathologists (CAP), EPA and LRN.
The NSPHL has formulated a management team to oversee all aspects of testing at the
State Lab in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Standards. The Laboratory Director
and Administrative Director/Laboratory Manager of the NSPHL oversee all testing
activities in the different divisions of the laboratory. In addition, a Quality Manager and
Biosafety Officer were added to the management team to assure broad expertise, staff
competency, result quality and safety oversight. The NSPHL has been working toward
ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Accreditation. The initial accreditation inspection is scheduled for
July 23-24, 2020 to be conducted by A2LA.
An overarching Quality Management System is and will continue to be maintained as
well as equipment to support the staff in performing existing Manufactured Food
Regulatory Program (MFRP) and foodborne illness outbreak testing.
Through the application of additional projects, it is desired that the existing food testing
capabilities at the NSPHL be expanded to include more analytical methods to comply
with The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) ultimately providing risk-informed food
safety strategies with foodborne illness prevention in mind.
