PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT “The Nutrition, Immunity and Inflammation Conference: From Model Systems to Human Trials” was selected by FASEB for their Science Research Conference (SRC) series and will be held in 2021 from July 25-29 at The Westin Snowmass Resort in Snowmass, CO. This is the sixth occurrence of the conference, which has traditionally highlighted mechanistic research, including clinical studies, examining the role of specific nutrients on immune function and host resistance. Continuing this tradition, we will focus on the effect of nutrition on innate and adaptive immunity in model systems and human trials. New additions to the conference this year, designed to expand the base of attendees from previous years, include a session on “nutritional immunity”, which will examine the competition between host and pathogen for essential nutrients, particularly minerals such as iron and zinc. This session will bring a distinct host-pathogen focus in addition to talks on the role of diet in establishing the commensal microbiome. Another new focus includes examination of the association of dietary patterns with development of inflammation-related metabolic diseases, thus bringing an epidemiological and clinical focus to the conference. We are expanding our funding request to provide support for students and early career investigators. This is consistent with a specific aim of the conference this year to create opportunities for students and early career investigators, particularly of diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, to develop connections with each other and with more senior investigators as networking is important for career development. Finally, information from the meeting will be disseminated in a special issues of a leading journal that will feature review articles from the speakers.
