PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT The UT Southwestern Advancement of Neuroscience Research Careers (UTSWANS) program promotes the development of future clinician-neuroscientists. The program is available to talented clinical residents and fellows in Neurology (adult and pediatric), Neurosurgery, and Neuropathology. Participants in UTSWANS receive a structured plan for integrating research activities as well as research education and mentorship into their clinical training. This goals of the program are to attract and encourage talented neuroscience clinicians toward a career as physician-investigators and to increase the likelihood that these individuals will succeed in obtaining initial independent funding for their research. UT Southwestern is an excellent environment for this training program. In the first cycle of funding, UTSWANS has been successful with its first participants and has a growing pipeline of potential participants. We have made refinements in the training plan and administrative structure of the program to further strengthen recruitment, to leverage resources and opportunities that are available to trainees through the O’Donnell Brain Institute and expanded the number and diversity of potential research mentors.
