PROJECT SUMMARY PARTICIPANT RESEARCH, INTERVENTIONS, & MEASUREMENTS CORE The goal of the Participant Research Interventions & Measurements Core (PRISM, formerly Survey Methods Core) is to assist Members with research design, implementation, and execution of population-based studies and to provide novel tools to support human subjects research across the translational continuum. PRISM assists Members with all aspects of research that is focused on patient generated health data. PRISM’s highly experienced team provides technical expertise in developing data collection instruments and study workflows including 1) testing recall, comprehension, and alternative wording for survey instruments; 2) assessing various interviewing techniques and respondent incentives; and 3) comparing multiple data collection modalities. The latest technologies and software are provided by PRISM to develop surveys in formats that are customizable to the unique needs of the study to reliably collect high-quality data. In addition, PRISM offers services covering the full spectrum of cognitive interviewing, from conducting interviews and focus groups to automatically transcribing audio files using machine learning software and analyzing qualitative data. PRISM activities towards its goals are organized into three Specific Aims: Aim 1: To consult with users on study design and development of measurement tools, new applications, and approaches. Aim 2: To provide high-quality Participant Reported Information and Outcomes (PRIO)-related services through digital and mHealth solutions. Aim 3: To educate and train Members and staff on participant-centered research services. PRISM services add value to therapeutic clinical trials, and to non-therapeutic research that spans cancer care delivery, quality of life, prevention, detection, and health disparities research across multiple programs through leveraging cutting-edge tools for collecting individual-level data of multiple types. In response to recommendations from a Member-led taskforce, over the last five year, PRISM increased its focus on: 1) leveraging electronic data capture modalities (e.g., web questionnaires, wearable devices); 2) developing novel tools for interpreting qualitative data; and 3) developing mHealth applications for participant interventions and education. This has resulted in an exceptional 300% increase in core usage and support of 86 peer reviewed publications (5 high impact). In FY20, PRISM supported 35 Members in four of the five Programs (CE 31%, MM 6%, HOB 52 %, IO 11%) with 84% of those Members holding peer reviewed funding. PRISM will continue to provide services to ensure efficient, valid, and reliable collection of participant self-reported information and will expand services in implementation science and reduce barriers to conducting timely survey-based research.
