## Abstract

ALTERATIONS AND RENOVATIONS: PROJECT SUMMARY
The Kansas Center for Metabolic and Obesity REsearch (KC-MORE) COBRE will expand the intellectual and
scientific efforts to understand basic mechanisms of metabolism and prevention and treatment of obesity in
animal models and diverse human populations. A cornerstone of our COBRE is emphasis on translational
research to provide effective prevention and treatment programs and this will be an important aspect of the
Human Energy Balance (HEB) core. Although the HEB core contains state-of-the-art equipment and trained
staff, the facility is less than ideal for effectively and efficiently administering testing and programs to individuals
with overweight or obesity. The HEB core is part of a larger faculty/staff fitness center (Kirmayer Fitness Center)
and does not have its own infrastructure. The proposed renovations include improvement to the floor layout,
installation of independent mechanical and electrical systems, additional plumbing, renovation of storage to
offices and exam rooms, studios for remote delivery of physical activity, a new space for metabolic testing, and
a unique entrance to the facility so research and clinic participants will no longer have to be exposed to the
activities and scrutiny of the Kirmayer facility. These renovations will complement the existing equipment and
will enhance both the clinical and research activities of the HEB core and the KC-MORE COBRE.
